Overview of Wollo University
Wollo University (WU) is one of Ethiopia's applied science public universities, established in 2005 as one of the second generation of universities located in Dessie City, Ethiopia. Dessie City is located in the Northern part of Ethiopia in Amhara National Regional State, South Wollo Zone at a distance of 400 km from Addis Ababa, Ethiopia. It sits at 11°8'N-11°46’N latitude and 39°38'E- 41°13’E longitude. Its elevation ranges between 2,470 and 2,550 meters above sea level.
The University has three campuses: Dessie (the main campus), Kombolcha Institute of Technology (KIoT) in Kombolcha, and the Tertiary Care Campus (TCC). Wollo University has three centers of excellence in health sciences, technology, and art & culture.
It commenced with one faculty namely: Faculty of Education. Immediately, the Faculty of Business and Economics, Faculty of Informatics, and Faculty of Engineering have been launched. Continuing its progress the University has upgraded its faculties into colleges, institutes, and schools in the year 2009/10 academic year. Currently, there are 14 colleges/institutes/schools in the three campuses. Eight of them are in Dessie campus. These are College of Agriculture, College of Business and Economics, College of Natural Sciences, College of Social Sciences and Humanities, Institute of Teachers’ Education and Behavioral Sciences, School of Arts, School of Law, and School of Veterinary Medicine. Moreover, under the College of Natural Sciences there is also one school, School of Bio-Science and Technology, and one academy, Sport Academy.
Besides, the Tertiary Care Campus is named as College of Medicine and Health Sciences which comprises Medicine Education and Service, Nursing and Midwifery Education and Service, Medical Laboratory Education and Service, Pharmacy Education and Service, Public Health Education and Service, and School of Environmental Health.
The Kombolcha campus is named as Kombolcha Institute of Technology (KIOT) which consists of one college, College of Informatics, and four schools, School of Electrical and Biomedical Engineering, School of Textile Engineering and Fashion, School of Civil, Water Resources Engineering and Architecture, and School of Mechanical & Chemical Engineering.
Today, the university hosts more than 20000 students and runs more than 83 undergraduates and 134 postgraduate (masters and 7 PhD) and 5 specialty programs in regular, extension, summer, and distance programs.
In the research and community engagement streams, the University also conducts several multidisciplinary types of research and community engagements based on pre-identified thematic areas in the field of Agriculture, Science and Technology, Health, Education, Business and Economics, Culture, art, and indigenous knowledge that have been contributed to the community as well as to the learning-teaching process.
Since its establishment, the university has been playing a significant role in the country’s development in terms of producing trained manpower in various fields of studies. The University makes a major contribution to the county in strengthening the society's political, economical, cultural, social, technological, environmental, and legal well-being through its efforts in the learning-teaching, research, technology exchange, and community engagement.
